Microsoft is set to host top executives from South Korea’s leading technology firms next month to strengthen its AI partnerships.

The high-level meeting, dubbed the MS CEO Summit 2024, will be held on 14 May 2024 and feature Microsoft’s founder Bill Gates and Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella. They will engage in closed-door discussions with Kyung Kye-hyun of Samsung, Kwak Noh-jung of SK Hynix, Cho Joo-wan of LG Electronics, and Ryu Young-sang of SK Telecom.

Sources for The Korea Economic Daily suggest that Microsoft plans to explore joint ventures in AI technology across various sectors. Discussions with Samsung and SK Hynix will likely centre on the joint development and supply of AI chips.

Samsung and SK Hynix are recognised as being among the world’s leading memory chipmakers and can enhance Microsoft’s server capabilities with next-generation technologies such as High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) AI chips and solid-state drives (SSDs).

Collaboration topics with LG Electronics will include integrating AI technologies into home appliances, a move that will boost Microsoft’s competitive edge against rivals like Google and Meta. With SK Telecom, Microsoft is expected to delve further into cloud and 5G services.

These meetings are timely, as the global tech landscape sees an increased focus on AI development. By potentially integrating Microsoft’s AI services into products like Samsung’s smartphones and LG’s home appliances, Microsoft could significantly elevate its market standing.

Kyung of Samsung’s Device Solutions indicated last month that their new AI accelerators, Mach-1 and Mach-2, will soon move into mass production. These accelerators are designed to optimise the synergy between GPUs and HBM chips, promising a revolution in processing speeds. Earlier this month, the company unveiled the industry’s first LPDDR5X DRAM which aims to boost on-device AI.

SK Telecom, under CEO Ryu, spearheads the Global Telco AI Alliance (GTAA). This consortium, including major global players like Deutsche Telekom and SingTel, aims to develop AI infrastructure and generative AI services across a customer base exceeding 1.3 billion globally.

Last year, SK Telecom invested $100 million in AI startup Anthropic to develop a large language model (LLM) specifically for telcos. The collaborative endeavour extends to the Telco AI Platform, an ongoing project initiated by the GTAA.

The MS CEO Summit 2024 presents an opportunity for enhanced AI cooperation and technological advancement, securing Microsoft’s position as a pivotal player in the industry.

Deutsche Telekom has announced a collaboration with UK-based AI startup Fetch.ai to promote cutting-edge AI and blockchain solutions. 

As the first major corporate partner of the Fetch.ai Foundation, Deutsche Telekom joins forces with Bosch and Fetch.ai in supporting an open AI and blockchain platform aimed at widespread adoption. Its subsidiary, Deutsche Telekom MMS, will also serve as a validator on the decentralised Fetch.ai network, helping secure transactions on the blockchain.

The core of Fetch.ai’s technology relies on autonomous software agents that can manage resources, conduct transactions, and analyse data flows independently thanks to AI algorithms. These agents unlock a myriad of real-world applications across sectors like automotive, supply chain, healthcare, and digital identity. 

For example, AI agents could optimise production schedules based on supply chain data or match patients to clinical trials using health records. The tamper-proof nature of blockchain also enables secure transmission and access to sensitive data.

“The convergence of blockchain, AI and IoT is trailblazing the digital transformation of entire industries,” said Dirk Röder, Head of Deutsche Telekom’s Web3 Infrastructure & Solutions team. “Autonomous agents will automate industrial services, simplifying processes securely thanks to blockchain.”

As a validator, Deutsche Telekom MMS will ensure network security as more devices, users, and services integrate with the Fetch.ai blockchain. Built on the Cosmos protocol, Fetch.ai operates as a permissionless decentralised network with open-source code that is accessible globally.  

The collaboration demonstrates how blockchain can unlock AI’s potential by providing reliable, transparent data while AI can help securely analyse blockchain transactions. Together, these technologies lay the foundations for a decentralised Web3 internet that empowers user privacy and control.

“This partnership signals real progress in integrating AI and Web3 innovations into the machine economy,” said Fetch.ai CEO Humayun Sheikh.

Deutsche Telekom and Fetch.ai will be working together at one of Europe’s largest AI and IoT hackathons, Bosch Connected Experience, on 28-29 February 2024.

Telecom companies are expected to increase their spending on AI for automating network management to $20 billion by 2028, a new report from Juniper Research found. This would represent a 240 percent rise from estimated spending levels in 2024 of $6 billion.

The researchers predict the investment growth will be necessary as telcos expand 5G networks globally and develop future 6G networks. The AI software will play a vital role in optimising network performance and security; the two most critical areas expected to account for over 50 percent of operator spending on AI by 2028.

As enterprises make increasing use of cellular connectivity for smart factories, self-driving vehicles, and other bandwidth-intensive applications, the report argues AI orchestration will be essential for telcos to maximise efficiency, reduce costs, and provide the best quality of service.

Automating functions like real-time network analysis and rapid adjustments to changing demands can minimise expenses tied to network operations and provisioning.

“As operators compete on the quality of their networks, AI will be essential to maximising the value of using a cellular network for connectivity,” said Frederick Savage, author of the report.

“High-spending users will gravitate to those networks that can provide the best service conditions.”

Telcos that fail to incorporate AI may ultimately struggle to keep pace with customer demands for performance and security.

Amdocs has partnered with NVIDIA and Microsoft Azure to build custom Large Language Models (LLMs) for the $1.7 trillion global telecoms industry.

Leveraging the power of NVIDIA’s AI foundry service on Microsoft Azure, Amdocs aims to meet the escalating demand for data processing and analysis in the telecoms sector.

The telecoms industry processes hundreds of petabytes of data daily. With the anticipation of global data transactions surpassing 180 zettabytes by 2025, telcos are turning to generative AI to enhance efficiency and productivity.

NVIDIA’s AI foundry service – comprising the NVIDIA AI Foundation Models, NeMo framework, and DGX Cloud AI supercomputing – provides an end-to-end solution for creating and optimising custom generative AI models.

Amdocs will utilise the AI foundry service to develop enterprise-grade LLMs tailored for the telco and media industries, facilitating the deployment of generative AI use cases across various business domains.

This collaboration builds on the existing Amdocs-Microsoft partnership, ensuring the adoption of applications in secure, trusted environments, both on-premises and in the cloud.

Enterprises are increasingly focusing on developing custom models to perform industry-specific tasks. Amdocs serves over 350 of the world’s leading telecom and media companies across 90 countries. This partnership with NVIDIA opens avenues for exploring generative AI use cases, with initial applications focusing on customer care and network operations.

In customer care, the collaboration aims to accelerate the resolution of inquiries by leveraging information from across company data. In network operations, the companies are exploring solutions to address configuration, coverage, or performance issues in real-time.

This move by Amdocs positions the company at the forefront of ushering in a new era for the telecoms industry by harnessing the capabilities of custom generative AI models.

SK Telecom and Deutsche Telekom have officially inked a Letter of Intent (LOI) to collaborate on developing a specialised LLM (Large Language Model) tailored for telecommunication companies.

This momentous agreement – signed in a ceremony at SK Seorin Building, Seoul – marks the culmination of discussions initiated by the Global Telco AI Alliance, a consortium launched in July 2023 by SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, E&, and Singtel.

This innovative partnership aims to create a telco-specific LLM that empowers global telcos to effortlessly and rapidly construct generative AI models. With a focus on multilingual capabilities (including German, English, and Korean), this LLM is designed to enhance customer services—particularly in areas like AI-powered contact centres.

Claudia Nemat, Member of the Board of Management for Technology and Innovation at Deutsche Telekom, said:

“AI shows impressive potential to significantly enhance human problem-solving capabilities.

To maximise its use, especially in customer service, we need to adapt existing large language models and train them with our unique data. This will elevate our generative AI tools.”

The collaboration also involves key AI industry players, such as Anthropic (Claude 2) and Meta (Llama2), enabling the co-development of a sophisticated LLM.

Anticipated to debut in the first quarter of 2024, the new telco-focused LLM will offer a deeper understanding of telecommunication service-related areas and customer intentions that surpass the capabilities of general LLMs.

One of the primary objectives of this collaboration is to assist telcos worldwide in developing flexible generative AI services, including AI agents. By streamlining the process of building AI-driven solutions like contact centres, telcos can save time and costs and open new avenues for business growth and innovation.

Ryu Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom, commented:

“Through our partnership with Deutsche Telekom, we have secured a strong opportunity and momentum to gain global AI leadership and drive new growth.

By combining the strengths and capabilities of the two companies in AI technology, platform, and infrastructure, we expect to empower enterprises in many different industries to deliver new and higher value to their customers.”

This collaboration signifies a proactive response to the escalating demand for AI solutions within the telco industry, promising a paradigm shift in the traditional telecommunications landscape. The announcement follows SK Telecom’s $100 million investment in Anthropic in August.

Artificial intelligence is helping telecoms operators to boost the RAN capacity of their 4G networks by 15 percent.

More people than ever are relying on telecoms networks to work, play, and stay connected during the pandemic. Operators are doing all they can to ensure their existing networks have enough capacity to cope with demand.

Gorkem Yigit, Principal Analyst at Analysys Mason, said:

“Video streaming continues to experience high year on year growth and that has been exacerbated by the pandemic and resulting lock-downs,

Yes, 5G grabs the spotlight, but 4G is carrying the brunt of this traffic. So, while investment in 5G infrastructure continues, operators need intelligent ways to maximize and extend existing 4G network capabilities in the short to medium term – keeping their CAPEX to a minimum.”

8 out of 10 of the world’s largest operator groups have deployed traffic management technology from the Openwave subsidiary of Swedish firm Enea. Many of these have since upgraded to include machine learning capabilities.

Openwave claims that, based on its figures, some operators faced a 90 percent surge in peak throughput during lockdowns.

Machine learning is helping to predict and identify congestion in the RAN (Radio Access Network) which resides between user equipment such as wireless devices and an operator’s core network.

John Giere, President of Enea Openwave, commented:

“Conventional mobile data management requires manual configuration and network investment – it is no longer fit for purpose.

Machine Learning has given existing 4G networks the shot in the arm they needed. It can work dynamically without external probes or changes to the RAN, delivering additional capacity at a time that operators most need it.” 

The use of machine learning has increased operators’ 4G RAN capacity by 15 percent in congested locations—providing further evidence of how AI technology can be used to quickly tackle real-world problems.
