The UK and Canada have signed a landmark agreement to collaborate on the computing power needed to advance AI research and development.

The new Memorandum of Understanding on compute was signed in Ottawa by UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan and Canadian Minister for Innovation, Science and Industry François-Phillippe Champagne. It cements the two countries’ partnership on AI by committing them to explore ways to give researchers and companies affordable access to the high-powered computing capacity required for cutting-edge AI systems.

Compute power and data are essential ingredients for developing modern AI models and applications. As AI rapidly advances, access to state-of-the-art computing infrastructure is increasingly vital for conducting groundbreaking research and staying globally competitive. The UK-Canada agreement recognises this and aims to foster joint innovation by improving compute access.

Specifically, under the new agreement, the UK and Canada will look at opportunities for collaborating on providing compute power for shared research priorities like biomedicine. They also intend to work together – and with like-minded countries – on sustainable models for sharing compute capabilities.

The compute agreement builds on a wider UK-Canada science and technology partnership also renewed during Secretary Donelan’s visit. This partnership identifies quantum computing, AI, semiconductors and clean energy as key areas for increased collaboration between British and Canadian researchers. It also focuses on coordinating scientific diplomacy efforts relating to new technologies.

Academics and researchers from both countries have been actively involved in collaborative programs, with £350 million awarded by UK Research and Innovation between 2020 and 2023. This includes pioneering initiatives like the first industry-led partnership on quantum technologies and a project on arctic ecosystems in collaboration with Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.

The latest accords reinforce the two countries’ “unique partnership” across science and innovation, said Secretary Donelan. She emphasised their commitment to harnessing emerging technologies as an “active force for good.”

Minister Champagne echoed this, saying the agreements will have “positive impacts across all fields of research and innovation.” He highlighted opportunities to link leading AI researchers in both countries.

The renewal of UK-Canada science ties comes as Secretary Donelan meets with AI experts and companies during a three-day visit. She held discussions on the future of AI with Yoshua Bengio, a pioneer in the field and recipient of the Turing Award, computing’s highest honour.

With a combined $5 trillion economy, the UK and Canada have committed to collaborating closely on technological innovation for the benefit of both countries and the wider world. The compute accord marks an important step toward realising that vision in the critical field of AI.

OpenAI has announced a partnership with nonprofit Common Sense Media to educate families on responsible AI use. Leaders from both organisations shared the news onstage at the Common Sense Summit for America’s Kids and Families.

Through the collaboration, OpenAI and Common Sense aim to empower parents, educators, and teens to use AI tools safely and effectively.

Initial projects will include developing AI guidelines and educational materials tailored for different age groups. Additionally, Common Sense will curate a list of family-friendly AI applications on OpenAI’s new GPT Store, lending its expertise in rating content and tech for kids.

“AI offers incredible benefits for families and teens, and our partnership with Common Sense will further strengthen our safety work, ensuring that families and teens can use our tools with confidence,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Common Sense founder James P. Steyer echoed a commitment to making AI a force for good, saying: “Together, Common Sense and OpenAI will work to make sure that AI has a positive impact on all teens and families.”

Steyer went on to highlight the potential for their guides and recommendations to lead to responsible adoption of chatbot tools like ChatGPT, avoiding any unforeseen issues resulting from the rapid advancement of AI.

The partnership comes on the heels of ChatGPT’s meteoric rise since its November 2022 launch. With Common Sense bringing child development expertise to the table, the groups aim to preemptively shape an AI future that protects and empowers kids.

Oracle and NVIDIA have formed a multi-year partnership to help customers solve business challenges with accelerated computing and AI.

The collaboration aims to bring the full NVIDIA accelerated computing stack – from GPUs to systems to software—to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).

OCI is adding tens of thousands more NVIDIA GPUs, including the A100 and upcoming H100, to its capacity. Combined with OCI’s AI cloud infrastructure of bare metal, cluster networking, and storage, this provides enterprises a broad, easily accessible portfolio of options for AI training and deep learning inference at scale.

Safra Catz, CEO, Oracle, said: “To drive long-term success in today’s business environment, organizations need answers and insight faster than ever.

“Our expanded alliance with NVIDIA will deliver the best of both companies’ expertise to help customers across industries – from healthcare and manufacturing to telecommunications and financial services – overcome the multitude of challenges they face.”

Accelerated computing and AI are key to tackling rising costs in every aspect of operating businesses,” said Jensen Huang, CEO and founder, NVIDIA. “Enterprises are increasingly turning to cloud-first AI strategies that enable fast development and scalable deployment. Our partnership with Oracle will put NVIDIA AI within easy reach for thousands of companies.”

NVIDIA and Oracle have been serving enterprises together for years with accelerated computing instances and software available via OCI. With the full NVIDIA AI platforms available on OCI instances, the extended partnership is designed to accelerate AI-powered innovation for a broad range of industries to better serve customers and support sales.

NVIDIA AI Enterprise, the globally adopted software of the NVIDIA AI platform, includes essential processing engines for each step of the AI workflow, from data processing and AI model training to simulation and large-scale deployment. NVIDIA AI enables organizations to develop predictive models to automate business processes and gain rapid business insights with applications such as conversational AI, recommender systems, computer vision and more. The parties plan to make an upcoming release of NVIDIA AI Enterprise available on OCI, providing customers with easy access to NVIDIA’s accelerated, secure and scalable platform for end-to-end AI development and deployment

Additionally, Oracle is now offering early access to NVIDIA RAPIDS acceleration for Apache Spark data processing on the OCI Data Flow fully-managed Apache Spark service. Data processing is one of the top cloud computing workloads. To support this demand, OCI Data Science plans to offer support for OCI bare metal shapes, including BM.GPU.GM4.8 with NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs across managed notebook sessions, jobs, and model deployment.

NVIDIA Clara, a healthcare AI and HPC application framework for medical imaging, genomics, natural language processing, and drug discovery, is also coming soon. Oracle and NVIDIA are additionally collaborating on new AI-accelerated Oracle Cerner offerings for healthcare, which span analytics, clinical solutions, operations, patient management systems and more.
